Practical Advice On How To Get Online Freelance Writing Job
Explore.
Take a look at what different freelance agency sites have to offer. Some agencies will offer a daily email listing the jobs that are available, others will offer a full service and provide billing, reminders and arbitration in the event of a disagreement between client and freelancer.
This type of service will demand a service fee, but in the long term it really pays off as you don’t spend precious writing time chasing payments. It also means that you have a level of security that you may not otherwise experience, and bills are paid in a timely manner.
Prepare.
Prepare a portfolio. This does not have to include everything that you have every written, just a few chosen pieces that you are proud of and that you feel represent you as a writer. Make sure that work is relatively recent and the content easy to read, maybe provide a synopsis of why the work was generated.
Focus on your profile. Include a recent photograph; the skills that you can offer; your qualifications and any recommendations from other clients that may not necessarily be online clients. Set up a skype account. Make sure that when you start your day, you are dressed for work, you really don’t want to skype in your PJ’s.
Focus.
This may not be specific to getting online writing jobs, but make sure that if you are working from home, that family and friends realise that when you are writing you are working, and not available for a long chat or an ad hoc shopping trip. You will find that you will have to be very disciple to meet deadlines.
Also focus on the competition. If some has been awarded over you then, why did that happen? It may be something as simple as location, skill set or that they put in the cheapest offer. If that is the case then, don’t sell yourself short because not every client is looking for the cheapest, they are looking for the best value.
Skills.
Some people find it difficult to write for different audiences. This may be because that have spent years just writing for a particular audience, mainly writing reports or academic work. Try something new, try article writing or blogs. Start you own blog. Improve your confidence by taking a short writing course.
Be flexible in your writing and in the way that you deal with people. Practise your skills on a daily basis. Some people find it hard to start that first piece of writing. Treat writing the same way that you would exercise and warm up first with a few simple writing tasks even if it is just a to-do list.
